Istria Awarded by Lonely Planet Readers

Precisely ten years after Lonely Planet first presented Istria to its readers as one of the Ten most interesting regions in the world, and two years since it titled it of one of the Ten best European destinations, the largest Croatian peninsula receives one of the Best in Travel awards once again. This time in a special category based on votes of Lonely Planet readers.

The readers of the world-famous travel guide book publisher nominated and chose Istria as a community destination of 2021. This category, along with sustainability and diversity destinations, makes up one of three categories whose winners were selected by readers.

Driven by the need for positive change that was reinforced by the challenging events of 2020, the editors invited their audience, the Lonely Planet community, to nominate destinations that they believe successfully use tourism as a driving force in the field of sustainability, community and diversity. The readers recognized Istria as one of those destinations and awarded it the Reader's Choice Award for Community.

The voters noted that they were particularly impressed by the lesser-known Istria, its family taverns, the honesty and kindness of the people, and authentic local food such as wine, prosciutto, truffles and award-winning Istrian olive oil. In case you didn't know, Istria is home to some of the world's best olive oils and, in 2021, the renowned guide Flos Olei declared it the best olive oil region in the world for the sixth time in a row.

Autumn, winter and spring are great seasons to visit Istria and explore this region full of beautiful landscapes, rich history, hospitable people and authentic food. Visit our destinations Pula and Medulin and explore Istria, the community destination for 2021.
